Ignatius of Loyola is credited with founding the Society of Jesus, a Roman Catholic order of priests, on August 15, 1534.

Boston College was founded by the Society of Jesus in 1863, making it "one of the oldest Jesuit, Catholic universities in the United States."

BC, as it is known colloquially, now officially aspires to "advance Boston College as the leading global Catholic university."
