HUACA PUCLLANA, LIMA, PERU, AT NIGHT

A PYRAMID IN THE CITY

HUACA PUCLLANA
AT NIGHT
Lima, Peru

Huaca Pucllana is "a pre-Colombian adobe-mud ceremonial centre that takes you by surprise," wrote Mark Rowe in The Independent, "both with its staggering visual presence -- painstakingly precise brickwork furnished into the shape of a mini city -- and its location. You practically bump into it after turning the corner of a middle-class street." The shock is even greater at night, especially if you are riding in a car in the big city and this pyramid flooded with lights suddenly materializes, more ethereal than real (above). Could it be some kind of theme park? you wonder in the dark.

No, it is for real, and dates back to about 500 AD. There are a number of on-line resources for exploring different aspects of Huaca Pucllana, also known as Huaca Juliana. A good overall introduction, including to the history of the different peoples who have settled in this area, is to be found here. More is added, including a striking aerial photograph giving some sense of the scale of this huaca, or sacred place, here. For a young man's blog with a series of photographs focusing on the archaeological site, see here. For an up-close-and-personal look at the vertical bricks making up the pyramid complex, and a reminder that "you can chat up archaeologists and visit a museum displaying objects found in the excavations" -- and oh, yes, there is a "well-regarded onsite restaurant" too -- see here.

There are three websites to recommend which feature photographs of the contents of a couple of tombs and the mummies within. The tomb dating around 850 AD is discussed and illustrated here and here. And finally, the most striking photograph (no, not mine, unfortunately) -- of the mummified head of a pre-Incan Wari woman -- whose face bristles with character (and two "big, bright blue orbs in her eye sockets") is here.

MACHU PICCHU CENTENARY II

MACHU PICCHU
IS "DISCOVERED"

July 24, 1911: Yale History lecturer HIRAM BINGHAM III "climbed a
2,000-foot-tall slope and encountered an abandoned stone city of which
no record existed," writes Mark Adams.

(Notice: Adams carefully writes "encountered," and not discovered.)

This year, the centenary, one million visitors are expected.

Mark Adams's long article in the New York Times (he has also written a
book, TURN RIGHT AT MACHU PICCHU, which I have not yet read),
is here.

Christopher Reynolds, who has been to Machu Picchu three times since
1988, has another perspective in a piece in the Los Angeles Times, here.

For some information on the official, Peruvian, celebration, held earlier
this month, see here.

To see some of my other photographs of Machu Picchu please go to
the LABELS row at the bottom of this posting, or use your find
function ("Machu Picchu"), and for more "Peru Scenes," see here.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF DISCOVERING MACHU PICCHU

A CENTURY OF
"DISCOVERING"
MACHU PICCHU

MACHU PICCHU, PERU

The celebrations have already begun for the centennial of Hiram Bingham's "explorations" of these ancient ruins, though the official date is given as July 24, 1911.

Some gorgeous photographs of these celebrations, especially the night-time ones, can be seen here.

To see some of my other photographs of Machu Picchu, please go to the bottom of this page, or use your find function ("Machu Picchu").

PIZARRO FOUNDS LIMA, PERU, January 18, 1535

LIMA, PERU
IS FOUNDED
January 18, 1535

FRANCISCO PIZARRO

The evidence of his skeleton is displayed
in Lima Cathedral (see above),
to prove that it is Pizarro
whose crypt is in the cathedral.

The 476th anniversary of the founding
is being celebrated today, but
the founder is not without controversy.

The city constructed,
the bones deconstructed (and reconstructed).
The head was severed from the body.
Literally.

PERU PROSPERS: (SOME OF) THE REST OF THE WORLD TAKES NOTICE

PERU PROSPERS

LIMA, PERU, AT NIGHT

The World Bank flags the growth in Latin America as a whole, and the New York Times, for one, takes note, and gives Peru a special notice. This April, the Times said, its GDP rose 9.3 percent year-on-year.

As always, it has to be seen, who in Peru and how much of Peru prospers.
