AFTERMATH OF
AN EXTRAVAGANZA
TRAFFIC CONTROL IN CAMBRIDGE,
MASSACHUSETTS, AFTER THE 2010
FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATIONS IN BOSTON
A state trooper was struck by a car while "directing
traffic in Cambridge following the Fourth of July
concert and fireworks display on the Esplanade,"
according to the Boston GLOBE. The officer is
recovering; an arrest was made and a DUI charge laid.
It is said that a half-a-million people attended the
Independence Day celebrations. Massive waves
of them appeared to be exiting on foot across the
Charles River from Boston to Cambridge, quite
a number carrying lawn chairs; one on crutches.
On the way in, when there was perhaps less police
supervision and control, many of the pedestrians
appeared to assume that their numbers and
destination made them Kings of the Road, and under
no compulsion to obey traffic lights; some of them
took reckless chances.
A salute to the management of half-a-million
comers and goers, and best wishes to Captain
Frank Hughes for a speedy recovery.
