A lawyer by training, Eizenstat went on to be Ambassador to the European Union and then hold various trade and economic posts under President Bill Clinton, culminating as Under Secretary of State for Economic, Business, and Agricultural Affairs and then Deputy Secretary of the Treasury (details here).
