PUTIN

THE NEWS
VLADIMIR PUTIN
ON THE DAY IN 2000
HE WAS FIRST ELECTED
PRESIDENT OF RUSSIA
There was Vladimir Putin, in Magnitogorsk, with factory workers, seemingly very much in campaign mode (or so the New York Times reporter, Michael Schwirtz, saw it). A bit of reflection on his eleven years at the top or in tandem; a small opening to a possible regret (over his 'wasting the bad guys in the outhouse' comment); a little softening of his profile -- maybe. Nonetheless, still ultimately The Decider: "'I have always been able to make decisions, so far at least, based upon what my heart says is necessary,' he said. 'And strange as it may seem, each time, and unexpectedly for me, things have turned out positively.'"
And then, all the news suddenly spun around his losing a prize, which, in all fairness, seems until now to have been a fairly obscure one. {to be continued}
