THE CASE OF
CHEN GUANGCHENG
JEROME A. COHEN
"Chen said I'm the only one he trusts."
The full transcript of the Q&A session with the
Council on Foreign Relations is here.
From the New York Times: Chen Guangcheng "has now proposed that he and his family be allowed to visit the United States temporarily, rather than request permanent asylum there, according to an American lawyer, Jerome A. Cohen, who has advised him this week. The proposal, Mr. Cohen said could be a face-saving solution for China, defusing a situation that threatens relations between the two countries."
Update, May 20, 2012: Chen Guangcheng arrived in the U.S. yesterday, and there to greet him was New York University (NYU) law professor Jerome Cohen; the photograph is here, and the video is here (Prof. Cohen is wearing his trademark bowtie). Mr. Chen, the "barefoot lawyer," is taking up an NYU fellowship to study law formally.
